A teaching for this moment

“Hasten with the funeral, for if the deceased was righteous, you are bringing them closer to good; and if otherwise, it is an evil you are laying off your necks.”

Sahih Muslim 944c

You Don’t Have to Know What to Do

In the hours after someone dies, families are asked to make decisions they have never had to make before, while grieving, and often while relatives on the other side of the world are asking questions.

Our role is to take that weight off you. We’ll tell you what needs to happen, in what order, and who needs to be contacted. Where things need arranging, we help arrange them. Where you need space, we give you space.

Every family receives guidance with dignity, patience and respect, however much or little help you need.

The First Steps

Call 03 7009 9050 at any time. We’ll ask a few practical questions and explain what happens next.

Medical certification and release

A doctor or hospital must certify the death before the body can be released. Where the death is reported to the Coroner, timelines change. We’ll explain what that means for your family and help you communicate with the relevant authorities.

Ghusl and kafan

Guidance for the washing and shrouding of the deceased, performed according to Islamic requirements, by people of the same gender as the deceased.

Salat al-Janazah

The funeral prayer, held at the masjid or cemetery. We can lead the prayer and guide those attending, including family members who are unfamiliar with it.

Burial

Guidance on burial according to Islamic requirements, including cemetery arrangements and du’a at the graveside.

The days that follow

Guidance for the bereaved does not end at the burial. Guidance is available on the mourning period, du’a and sadaqah for the deceased, and continuing care for the family.

Guidance for the Bereaved

Grief has a long tail. The days immediately after a death are full of people and arrangements; it is often the weeks afterwards, when everyone has gone home, that are hardest.

Ongoing guidance is available through our Islamic counselling service, and families frequently arrange a Khatam al-Qur’an gathering in memory of their loved one.
